It's hats off for one Lorna Irungu who must be the bravest girl on Kenyan soil. In a story she gave to the new look Drum East Africa, Lorna says that she believes in the possibility of only good things happening to her.These are very brave words coming from a young woman who has had to grapple life threatening ailments for over ten years. Just this year in January she was admitted in hospital suffering from tuberculosis of the spine. I watched her on TV some time back explaining what she has to go through in terms of treatment. This left two of her vertebrae badly damaged. She spent much of January in a medically induced coma. Treatment of the TB left her kidneys and liver badly damaged and she now has to undergo dialysis treatment twice a week. To this end she has a permanent catheter on the upper right side of her chest onto which the dialysis machines are hooked when she goes for her sessions. And yet despite all this, Lorna has bounced back much to the surprise of some of the doctors who were treating her.When we speak of her kidneys note that she has had two kidney transplants already, one in 1998 and another in 2001. Much earlier she was diagnosed with Lupus, which according to Wikipedia is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body's cells and tissue resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. It can affect any part of the body but most often harms the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys and nervous system. It seems in Lorna's case it affected her kidneys.Health issues aside, last year Lorna suffered another blow when her father died of HIV complications as she discloses here. Just how much can one girl take? And yet Lorna seems to be always charming and full of cheer. Quite a strong girl this one.Before I read Lorna Irungu's story I think I had started getting a little bit too comfortable. I had spent the afternoon in the office whining about silly stuff. The afternoon is dragging too long, the tea is not sweet enough, emails are not going through, some files are missing, oh it's too hot.......... and on and on. Then I bought the magazine on my way home and I thought you know what? We need to be grateful for everything we have.Despite all this the cheerful girl still does not know how to be sad. Lorna's words in verbatim, "you can decide to be a crier or a fighter, a person who rejoices. I do not know how to be sad." My Name is Chile Pepper, and this is my story, in my own words. My foster mom named me that because I was such a "hot little item" for quite some time.My Early LifeWhen I was a tiny pup, about five weeks old, three mean guys cut off my ears with scissors. Two of them held me down while the other cut: it hurt a lot; and I cried and cried. A couple of days later I was still bleeding and unresponsive, so I was taken to the vet, nearly dead.I was so limp and listless that the doctors and nurses wondered if I would live because of the blood loss and collapsed lung. But I was a brave little boy and very determined that I would live to love another day! Perhaps you saw me on TV, in newspapers, or featured in an SPCA video.Later I was an honored guest at The Roundhouse (the New Mexico State Capitol) with Ali MacGraw, speaking for animal/child abuse legislation --- how animal abuse is an indicator for future, or even current, child abuse in a home....Determining that I was an animal abuse case, the Santa Fe County Animal Control took possession of me. Next, I was turned over to the Animal Shelter for protection, then placed with a foster family. It was a wonderful place with three big doggie friends and a little two-year-old girl who loved me, played with me, and taught me to be gentle with children. My foster mom, Carmen, taught me good manners; since I was an American Pit Bull Terrier, she knew I would have to be extra well behaved so that the terrible reputation that preceded me (very much unfair to my breed!) would be defused, and I would win people over. She patiently worked with me, and soon I absolutely loved having my ears rubbed and scratched!Bad Guys Learn To Respect Animal's livesThe three mean guys, who thought they would make me a fight-to-the-death dog, went to jail, paid fines, and did community service.After several months, when the hoop-la was over and people no longer feared for my life, it was time to go to a new home. My foster mom loved me, and I made her laugh, but I was too big for her small home.How I Meet My New HumanOver Christmas, while my foster family was on holiday, I spent a week with my good friend Kate Rindy, director of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. I got a visit from a girl named Annie. She had walked over from her nearby office; she often came to visit the shelter and enjoyed saying, "Hi!"to all the animals. This time she made a special trip just to see me!I could tell she loved me right away, and I loved her, too. I jumped up and gave her a great big hug! I put my big pink nose all over her and could smell all the other doggies and horses and country life. I could tell that she loved doggies and let them snuggle on the couch, sleep on the bed, and ride in the truck with her everywhere she went. I knew this was the human for me, but she went away and didn't come back.There were several families who had qualified to adopt me, and my foster mom took me to some of them for try-outs; keeping my tail between my legs and sulking, I told them I was not happy with them; so back home we went. if I told my foster mom what I liked and didn't like, she would eventually figure out that I wanted to live with Annie. I kept thinking of Annie, and as it turned out, she kept thinking of me too.HOMECOMING!Then one glorious Saturday my foster mom and I went to visit Annie's home and all her critters. I was joyous beyond belief! Right away I played and ran with a Cattledog puppy. Hallelujah, I was finally in the home of my dreams! Annie loves me!There is a pond to play in, lots of other doggies who happily accept me, a kitty to sniff, couches and beds on which to lounge, vehicles to help drive; and the horses leave me the most delicious round cookies (guaranteed to form great green clouds four hours later!). I was ecstatic! For the first couple of weeks I was quite the "Velcro"dog, somewhat unsure if this was a permanent home or not. my new human was not going to be out of my sight. I wanted her to know how happy I was to be part of her family.Now it's 2006, and I'm nearly ten. I've had such a wonderful life, in spite of two TPLO surgeries in 2000 (tore my stifle ligament and had the tibia bones realigned). I still run along on horseback rides, where I can pursue one of my favorite activities, chasing rabbits. I'm not fast enough to catch them, but what a fun game we play!Thank you for reading my story. And now that it is about 75% more costly than Chile's in 2000, a huge money-maker.......Even tho Supplements Helped Chile as the years went by, oh how I wish we had given him LOADS of them when he first tore his ACL, given him rest, and perhaps he would not have had to endure the surgeries.... not to mention the atrophied butt muscles, and knock-knees. I was ecstatic! For the first couple of weeks I was quite the "Velcro"dog, somewhat unsure if this was a permanent home or not. my new human was not going to be out of my sight. I wanted her to know how happy I was to be part of her family.Now it's 2006, and I'm nearly ten. I've had such a wonderful life, in spite of two TPLO surgeries in 2000 (tore my stifle ligament and had the tibia bones realigned). I still run along on horseback rides, where I can pursue one of my favorite activities, chasing rabbits. I'm not fast enough to catch them, but what a fun game we play!Thank you for reading my story. Sometimes life is a tragic romance. Particularly if you're Elmi Bodheri, one of Somalia's most celebrated modern poets and allegedly the first Somali man to die of a broken heart.Bodheri was a poor baker; whose poems written in the 1930's and 40's have made him a literary legend, household name and lovers' hero. It all began when he worked for his uncle in Berbera, making bread and selling it in what was then British Somaliland. One fine day he saw and was instantly smitten with a girl named Hodhan who came in for bread rolls or something like that. So he began reciting impromptu poetry to her over the counter - suddenly, and with neither inkling nor warning. That brief but oh-so-meaningful encounter caused Bodheri to venture forth in verse from then onwards although the pair's eyes never again met, let alone their hearts.Keeping Love QuietOther Somali poets had spoken of love, but this was a step too far for their society of the late 30's and Bodheri was labeled unmanly. Somali men took pride in being masculine and it was considered shameful for a man to say: "I love you" to a woman, and worse still to be so elaborate and effusive about it. His family disapproved, his clan scorned him and most local folk saw the baker as embarrassing and insulting. In those days, poets were required to recite the daily news in a way that made it easy to remember: romantic rhyme was viewed as excessive even for bread enthusiasts of the era!Bodheri felt the whole world should know he didn't get his girl but the lingo he used was way too explicit for the times. In those days, if a Muslim poet wanted to touch a woman's bosom, for instance, he'd have to disguise it as wanting to pluck an apple from a tree in her neighbourhood or something similar. Mentioning, naming or describing a lady could get you killed, so names were often changed. Bodheri hardly disguised Hodhan's identity in his poems, merely annotating it to "Hadra". No one bought it, of course.If Not…Why Not?In the eyes of Somali society, the problem between the pair was basic incompatibility. He was poor, she was not. His clan was weak, hers was strong. Bodheri was around 30 years old, Hodhan was reportedly 9.Bodheri was heartbroken. "I have been compelled to weep for love's sake," he declared. "Oh God! How much has my mouth betrayed me? And how people have been so cruel to me." In Somali, the word for fate is 'alaf'. Apparently, alaf decided that Bodheri and Hodhan weren't meant to be.Leaving a Loving LegacySo was it a mutual attraction? Only Hodhan knew for sure, given that the culture of the time prohibited girls from speaking of such matters. At 15, she married a clerk, became a seamstress and raised nine children. She never spoke of Bodheri, but poetry did: this oral tradition travels fast among Somalis, and everyone knew she was the Hodhan.Bodheri's own wife got fed up of him calling her "Hodhan" and left him. The love-lorn baker withered and wasted away until his death on the 1940s.Somalis say their society learned a lot from Bodheri. Firstly, that families should consider the feelings of their children before arranging their marriages and secondly, that saying "I love you" is not so bad, after all.Today, many Somali girls grow up hoping for an attraction as strong as Bodheri's was for Hodhan and to be loved as wildly and deeply. The immortal tragic couple that never was often show up in modern Somali love songs and poems. Man Somali men say living up to Bodheri's romantic reputation is a tough call.
