Binibining PilipinasIn 1999, Quiambao joined the Binibining Pilipinas (Miss Philippines) pageant. As she walked, the heel of one of her shoes got caught in the trail of her evening gown and she slipped on the floor. At the finals, Quiambao referred to the incident during an interview portion. She said "she felt she represented those women who have fallen both on and off the stage". Not only are more and more women getting in on the act, but they are also heading to where the wild things are with the guys in their life. As they stood on the boat they could see and hear the water spouts of whales."Then huge whales would surface," she says, "and you could watch their majestic tails as they breached the water. It was breathtaking."In the evenings they would go down to the beach together to start a big bonfire. They "took the time to breathe," and to enjoy all the glorious surroundings in a "quiet and private and wonderful" place far from their old Kentucky home."After all these years together," Donna Smith says of hunting and fishing with her husband, "we have something in common. Time to take a break from looking at pictures of pretty Japanese girls.
How about the destructive wrath of Mother Nature as she pays a visit to Japan sometime in the late Meiji era? Here we see the incredible roiling, boiling waters of a mad torrent of water flooding the Main Street of a rural town. The shop folk are standing high on the side -- some perched on boxes -- as the rising waters lap at their toes. Have you ever seen such beautiful standing waves? Such vivid turbulence?
As the waters reach the bottom of the photograph, they suddenly seem to change into the swirling bands of clouds seen on the planet Jupiter. The water seems like a work of art. And......it is a work of Art --- literally !

The photographer made the print as you see it, but apparently was not satisfied with the "level of activity" therein. He (or an artist friend) painted in the embellished drama right on top of the real water --- water that a slow shutter speed had probably smoothed out to an unacceptable level of photographic boredom.
The doctored print was re-shot, and printed as you see it here. Actually, it's a pretty good piece of work --- effective and believable enough to give you a feel of what it must have felt like to be there. And who knows, perhaps the retouched, embellished water is a more accurate picture than that taken by the camera with a shutter speed that might have blurred it all out --- well, except for the clouds of Jupiter in the foreground.
In 1908, Tokyo was hit with a huge flood that put many parts of the town knee-deep in water. There are lots of postcards and stereoviews commemorating that. As for this one, I have know idea where it is. It is simply a great shot showing what could be done with a photograph long before computers, PhotoShop, and CGI came along.

Part of the little raft belongings consisted of an old sail, and this they spread over a nook in the bushes for a tent to shelter their provisions; but they themselves would sleep in the open air in good weather, as became outlaws.

Yet, when I glance at the selection of the top shelf publications in newsagents throughout the world, I'm always astounded at how this beautiful combination has been reduced to a vulgar version of the original pin-up girl. So, for those of you who don't know them, here's a brief history of the first illustrated pin-up girls printed throughout the United States and Europe as of the end of the 19th century...The Gibson GirlThe Gibson Girl was the brainchild of Charles Dana Gibson (1967-1944) and is credited with being the world's first pin-up. These pen-and-ink drawings represented independent, mischievous and adventurous Victorian women with feminine s-shaped silhouettes and hair piled high on their heads. The Gibson Girl had a huge influence on fashion and her tiny corseted waist, large hips and bust were inspired by the less restrictive health corsets worn by women of the fashionable upper-middle-classes. She was discovered on Mount Ampato in the nearby Colca Valley by anthropologist Johan Reinhard in 1995. Also known as the Frozen Lady or the Lady of Ampato, Juanita is remarkably well preserved which made her an important discovery, even ranked among the top 10 world discoveries of 1995. The Ice Maiden was discovered following a series of volcanic eruptions in the regions which melted the ice on top of the mountain and allowed her grave to be uncovered. She was luckily found before her body started to degenerate, allowing for great conservation. The excellent preservation of the body allowed for several biological tests that gave new and fascinating insights into the Inca way of life. Juanita is believed to have been between 14 and 15 years old when she was sacrificed to the gods, as next to her body were found several ceremonial offerings also very well preserved. She was lovely, and this performance was something hard for the average tourist to experience, for which we were quite grateful. The excellent preservation of the body allowed for several biological tests that gave new and fascinating insights into the Inca way of life. Juanita is believed to have been between 14 and 15 years old when she was sacrificed to the gods, as next to her body were found several ceremonial offerings also very well preserved. You can admire her alpaca shoes together with fine ceramic items as well as gold and silver idols dressed in feathers.
