Theseus and Bianor, New York, NY

A stereoscopic image of the dramatic bronze sculpture "Theseus Fighting the Centaur Bianor" from 1849 by French sculptor Antoine-Louise Barye (1795-1875) .

In this sculpture, the Greek hero Theseus, the mythic founder of Athens, delivers a death blow to the centaur, Bianor, as described in the twelfth book of Ovid's seminal Latin work Metamorphoses, in the passage describing the skirmish between the Centaurs and Lapithites.

The centaurs were invited guests at the wedding feast of Pirithous, a Lapithite. Getting drunk from wine, which they were not used to consuming, the centaur Eurytion leapt upon the bride and attempted to rape her. The other centaurs who's wild natures were similarly unleashed, joined in and attempted to rape the other women and boys.

In the battle that ensued, Theseus came to the Lapiths' aid and during the battle, Theseus leapt onto Bianor's back, pressed his knees into the centaur's sides and rode along as the centaur galloped away. Theseus grabbed hold of Bianor's hair, and bludgeoned him repeatedly with his hardened oak club, till Bianor succumbed, throwing Theseus from his back.

The Lapiths were a legendary Greek people, hailing from the state of Thessaly. They were related by blood to the centaurs, each of their races sprung from twins sired by Apollo and the nymph Stilbe.

Metamorphoses was written by Ovid in 8 AD and covers the history of the world from creation through to the deification of Julius Caesar.

This sculpture is part of the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's European sculpture.
